The Last Human Architect Is Bored

work / post-mortem

In the ruins of New Kyoto, an architect spends her days verifying the structural integrity of buildings designed by a rogue generative engine. They are beautiful, impossible, and completely uninhabitable for the human form.

She is the last human architect because her firm decided, last spring, that the role of "architect" was now best understood as a quality-assurance function. The generative engine produces a hundred buildings before lunch. She signs off on the ones whose load paths do not violate physics. Most of them do.

This is the texture of the collapse: not unemployment, exactly, but a slow demotion of human judgement to the role of fact-checker. The work that remains is the work the model is least confident about — which means the work that nobody can verify either.

She drinks her coffee. The buildings rise.

When people ask what she does for a living, she says she is an architect. She no longer says it with a smile.
